The preferences of buyers in Epsom and the surrounding areas are constantly evolving, driven by various factors including environmental consciousness, economic considerations, and regulatory changes. One trend that has been gaining significant traction in recent years is the increasing demand for energy-efficient homes. This shift is not only evident in buyer behavior but also in seller strategies.

According to a recent survey conducted by #Dataloft, it has been found that 39% of respondents have noticed a greater interest from buyers in energy-efficient homes. This marks a noticeable increase from 34% reported in the previous year, indicating a growing awareness and prioritisation of energy efficiency among homebuyers. This trend is not limited to just buyer interest; sellers are also taking notice.

In response to this demand, 43% of survey participants stated that sellers are now looking to attach a premium to homes that are more energy efficient. This suggests that sellers recognise the added value of energy-efficient features and are leveraging them as selling points to command higher prices in the market. Furthermore, 37% of respondents noted that higher energy-efficient homes are holding their value well in the current market, indicating their resilience and attractiveness to potential buyers.

So, what exactly are these energy-efficient features that are garnering such attention? The survey highlights several popular upgrades, including insulation upgrades, installation of energy-efficient heating systems, and the incorporation of renewable energy sources such as solar panels. These improvements not only reduce energy consumption and utility bills but also contribute to a more sustainable living environment, aligning with the growing eco-consciousness of modern consumers.

Recognising the significance of this trend, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has taken a proactive step by launching a new Residential Retrofit Standard. This standard aims to provide high-quality retrofit advice to homeowners and industry professionals, addressing the increasing demand for energy-efficient solutions amidst rising energy prices and government net-zero targets. By setting a benchmark, RICS is facilitating the transition towards more energy-efficient homes and supporting the broader sustainability agenda.
